About BC Rockies Deaf & Hard of Hearing Hockey Program
The BC Rockies are a deaf and hard of hearing hockey program under the parent organization, BC Deaf Sports Federation. Our mandate is to create a program that provides support, friendship and exercise for the players in the program.
The skill level of the players vary as some players have played hockey as high as Junior A and others are just starting out. We provide different levels of support for our players as we put together a couple different types of teams: BC Rockies Selects, BC Junior Rockies and the BC Rockies.
BC Rockies Selects
This team is comprised of players who wish to take part in the Canada Deaf Ice Games as players will be scouted and selected for this team. Players who participate in the Canada Deaf Games will be scouted and can be selected to try out for the Canadian National team that plays in the Deaflympics and the World Deaf Games.
Players who play for this team are mandated to have a hearing loss of below 55 decibels in both ears. If player wears hearing aids this range must be measured without their hearing aids.
The BC Rockies Selects played their first game as a provincial deaf team in 2006 at the 6th Canadian deaf Ice Hockey Championships in Calgary, Alberta, placing 3rd and winning a bronze medal.
In the years before 2006, the BC players combined with Alberta, Manitoba or Saskatchewan to form a Western Prairies team in past tournaments. On average there were about 6 players from BC at this time. With the recent exposure of the club, the numbers have jumped exponentially.
BC Junior Rockies
As our program grows we are working towards offering support for our youth aged players who aspire to play for the BC Rockies Selects or love to play hockey. Our goal is to provide a monthly practice and clinics for the players and to keep them involved with what is going on in the BC Rockies program.
If you are or know of a youth who is hard of hearing or deaf and might be interested in this program, please contact us.
